Outdoor hour challenges #33 and #35 - Oaks and apples

I have missed posting about two of our outdoor hour challenges. One week we were to study Oak Trees and on another week we were to look at Apple Trees. I know during each of these weeks we went out to look at those specific trees but I guess I never felt like we really gave them enough of study for me to post about.

As far as I can tell, there is only one oak tree in our neighborhood. Maybe people have them in their back yards but along the street where we normally walk there is only one. It is a large tree and looks like it has been there a long time. Before the houses were put in I am sure. I guess oak trees are just too slow growing to be planted in a housing development. At least they left this one for us to enjoy.
My kids love to collect the acorns that are almost always littering the sidewalk under and around this tree.
On this particular day it looks like the owner of the house decided to rake all the acorns off of his front lawn. There were so many acorns the kids couldn't ride their bikes or scooters over this patch of sidewalk. But they did stop to get a good look at all the acorns and leaves.

Apple trees aren't plentiful in our neighborhood, at least not in people's front yards. We know a number of our friends who have fruit trees in their back yard but on our walk one day we did find this heavy laden apple tree.
We didn't pick any apples off the tree but we did find a number of apples on the ground to look at. One had a very strange shape. One half didn't look like it grew while the other rounded out nicely.
After looking for and at this one apple tree we headed home to make an apple treat. We attempted an apple tart. We have never made one before and it is a lot more work then we thought it would be. Keeping the dough chilled and such was hard on kids who don't like to wait. But we certainly enjoyed eating the tart when it was finished and of course sampling the cinnamon sugar covered apples while we baked.

It certainly didn't last long. So it was worth the effort.

We didn't do any drawings for either of these challenges but we have been reading a lot about deciduous trees and apples simply because it is fall.

Wow, what a lot of acorns. I went out yesterday to find some acorns and I realized that the squirrels and scrub jays have collected most of the good ones already. What do you think that means? Is it going to be a long winter or something like that?

Your apple tart looks so yummy!

Thanks for the link and I enjoyed your photos too.

Your kids are blessed to have you teaching them so many wonderful things!

We, too, have been enjoying the trees in our area. Right now they are ablaze with color and are gorgeous!

Now eating the apple tart is how I want to be studying them! You have the right idea! Looks like so much fun playing in those acorns. I am impressed how well you have followed the outdoor challenges.

We have no apple trees here...
hoping to see them on vacation.
I think it must be neat to pick them right off the tree.
